The Denver Nuggets are in a bit of a bind right now, with injuries hitting their roster hard. One of the most significant absences is Aaron Gordon, who’s been out for seven straight games with a calf injury. With a big game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday, January 8, his status is still up in the air.
There’s been some progress, though. Gordon joined parts of practice on Monday before the Nuggets game against the Boston Celtics, which is a good sign, but he’s still listed as doubtful. Calf injuries can be tricky, and the team doesn’t want to risk anything. This season, Gordon’s been a steady presence for the Nuggets, averaging 13.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.3 three-pointers per game while shooting an impressive 52.3% from the field and 44.0% from beyond the arc. His two-way play has definitely been missed.
Denver’s had a hard time finding their groove at home without Gordon and others. Last season, they were nearly unbeatable at Ball Arena, going 33-8. This year, they’re 10-7. Tuesday’s loss to the Celtics didn’t help either. With Nikola Jokic sidelined due to illness, the Nuggets couldn’t quite keep up despite solid contributions from Julian Strawther (19 points) and Peyton Watson (14 points). Boston pulled away late, handing Denver a 118-106 defeat.
Now, the Nuggets have to turn their attention to the Clippers. LA has been struggling on the road, losing its last three away games, but it still has one of the best defenses in the Western Conference. With James Harden and Paul George leading the way, it’ll definitely make it difficult for Denver, especially if Gordon and Jokic remain out.
What’s Next For The Denver Nuggets?
The Nuggets are dealing with a packed injury report, with Aaron Gordon (calf), Nikola Jokic (illness), Spencer Jones (thigh), DaRon Holmes II (Achilles), and Vlatko Cancar (knee) all either questionable or out. The Nuggets have averaged 120.3 points per game this season but have struggled defensively, allowing 118.2 points over their last 10 games.
Crucial players like Michael Porter Jr. and Christian Braun have stepped up to keep the Nuggets competitive, with Braun excelling in transition plays. The Clippers, known for their strong defense and holding opponents to 107.9 points per game, present a significant test for the Nuggets. Without Gordon, Denver must rely on its depth to stay in the playoff hunt, currently having a 20-15 record.
