The main reason people go to NBA games is undoubtedly to see their favorite superstars, and the best basketball the world has to offer, but the actual facility itself plays a big role in how enjoyable the experience can be. This is why we are seeing so many franchises invest in these new state-of-the-art facilities. When an arena has a rich history, or was newly renovated, it is a big appeal for people to want to get tickets.
On the other hand, when your arena is known for being outdated, uncomfortable, bad location, or poor food/beverage options – this can contribute to people choosing to stay home and watch the game on television instead. Let’s look at the 5 best and 5 worst NBA arenas.
Best: Madison Square Garden (New York Knicks)
Referred to as “The Mecca of Basketball,” Madison Square Garden has the richest history in the NBA. Opening in 1968, MSG is one of the most famous venues in the entire country, as it also hosts so many other events, like concerts, hockey, and boxing. The Garden also has arguably the most electric atmosphere in the entire NBA. The New York fans are loud and passionate, and there are always plenty of celebrities sitting courtside, even interacting with the other team (see Reggie Miller and Spike Lee in the 90s). Its location couldn’t be more iconic, sitting in the heart of New York City.
Worst: Smoothie King Center (New Orleans Pelicans)
The Smoothie King Center has gone through a recent renovation, but it still lags behind other arenas in terms of amenities and atmosphere. Many of their own fans have even criticized its location and overall bland facilities.
Best: Crypto.com Arena (Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers)

Crypto.com Arena (formerly known as Staples Center) was built at a historic time for the Los Angeles Lakers. Opening in 1999, this modern and expansive arena was built right before Kobe and Shaq led the Lakers to a three-peat in 2000-2002. Crypto.com Arena is located in downtown Los Angeles and has hosted its fair share of legendary NBA moments as the Lakers have won 6 NBA titles since the arena opened. It’s known for its sleek design, comfortable seating, and excellent sightlines, Crypto.com Arena is one of the most famous venues in America, hosting so many other events and award shows on top of 2 NBA Franchises.
Worst: Capital One Arena (Washington Wizards)
Capital One Arena, located in Washington D.C., has faced criticism for its outdated facilities and lack of modern amenities. On top of that, Washington D.C. can be a very unpleasant place to visit with a very high crime rate.
Best: Chase Center (Golden State Warriors)
This one is bittersweet since the Warriors’ historic mid-2010s rise and 3 NBA Championships were played at Oracle Arena in Oakland in front of the most rabid fans in the league at the time. The Chase Center opened in 2019 and is located in San Francisco. One of the newer arenas in the NBA, it boasts state-of-the-art facilities, excellent amenities, and a stunning waterfront location.
Worst: Little Caesars Arena (Detroit Pistons)
Little Caesars Arena opened recently in 2017, but still received a very tepid response from fans. Many fans criticize the lack of originality and generic design, and Detroit is not a sought-after city to visit.
Best: TD Garden (Boston Celtics)
TD Garden was built in 1995, after the Celtics glory days, but their fanbase makes it one of the best arenas to watch basketball. Boston is known for having some of the most passionate and lively fans, creating an intense and fun environment. On top of the atmosphere, it offers great sightlines, comfortable seating, and excellent food and beverage options.
Worst: Amway Center (Orlando Magic)
While the Amway Center offers decent amenities and sightlines, it lacks the atmosphere and energy found in other NBA arenas. Maybe, because they are in Orlando, and everyone has many other things to do in the area. It would be tough competing with Disney World after all.
Best: Fiserv Forum (Milwaukee Bucks)
Fiserv Forum is one of the newest arenas in the NBA, opening in 2018, and was host to the first championship with fans after Covid when the Bucks won in 2021. Known for its modern design and fan-friendly features, it offers excellent sightlines, comfortable seating, and a wide range of dining options. The Forum is also located in the heart of the downtown, adding to the appeal with the modern facilities.
Worst: Target Center (Minnesota Timberwolves)
Since 2010, the Target Center has had the lowest attendance of all NBA teams. Some of it may have to do with the team’s lack of success, some of it could be the location, but the facts are the facts. Many fans have complained about the arena’s inability to handle large crowds and sellouts when those do happen.
