LeBron James, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and even the great Michael Jordan all started as rookies once. It was one breakout season for each of them that made them come into prominence. Similarly, every year, a bunch of athletes emerge who cement their status as potential NBA stars of the future.
As the 2024-25 season approaches, a host of athletes are waiting in the wings to rub their shoulders against some of the big names of the NBA. Here’s a look at the top 5 star players this year with the potential for a breakout season.
Top 5 NBA Stars Who Have Potential For A Breakout Season
5. Scoot Henderson
Scoot Henderson had a modest season last year, averaging 5.2 assists and 12.5 points per game. But don’t let that fool you. The immense potential Henderson has can be fathomed from the glimpses he showed after the All-Star break. Coming in as a top draft pick, Henderson will be a key component for the Portland Trail Blazers in the absence of Damian Lillard. Having an increased responsibility as the Trailblazers’ lead guard, Henderson can be one of the biggest draws this NBA season.
4. Amen Thompson
Amen Thompson has already shown his agility and dynamic playing style. Despite missing a chunk of his rookie season due to injury, Thompson can be the dark horse for the Houston Rockets. Thompson, who is 6’7” in height, will allow the Rockets to utilize him in multiple positions. Although his shooting needs to improve a lot, his knack for providing quality assists and getting closer to the rim will surely set him apart this season.

Franz Wagner and the Orlando Magic have been creating some magic for the past two seasons. Averaging 3.5 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 18.6 points, Wagner has shown significant improvement in every aspect of his game. His 6’9” frame also contributes heavily to his abilities as a forward. With a little effort in his playmaking and shooting abilities, Wagner can be a menace to opponents. Especially when paired with Paolo Banchero.
2. Victor Wembanyama
Making a list of the top 5 breakout athletes and not mentioning San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama feels like a crime. Showing some of the best defensive glimpses last year, Wembanyama is an obvious choice for this year’s Defensive Player of the Year. The 7’4” wonder kid will further have the chance to sharpen his skills while playing alongside Chris Paul this season. Thus, we can very well see Wembanyama transition to a superstar from being a star this season.
1. Jaden Ivey
Jaden Ivey is now in his third year of college. Picked up by the Detroit Pistons, the 6’4” two-way guard had the privilege of getting significant playtime. This was largely due to Cade Cunningham’s absence due to injury. Gaining some invaluable experience, Ivey will be eager to fire on all cylinders this season, trying to take his game to the next level.
Thus, with so many youngsters ready to set the NBA season on fire, it now remains to be seen who comes out on the top.
