This is not how anyone wanted to see the 2020 edition of the Daytona 500 end.
Sitting in first place during the final lap, Ryan Newman appeared to be headed for the checkered flag and his second Daytona 500 victory when disaster struck.
Heading into the final turn, Ryan Blaney appeared to be looking to pass Newman, first one the outside, then on the inside, when suddenly he seemed to clip the back of Newman’s car, sending the No. 6 Ford crashing into the wall before flipping on its hood and going up in flames.
Denny Hamlin would go on to win the race over Blaney in the second closest Daytona 500 ever, but the news that everyone was most concerned about was the health of Newman.
As medical teams aided Newman, black tarps were used to block viewers from watching the scene, and media members were asked to leave pit row.
