There was plenty of drama down the stretch of this year’s Indy 500. Some of it was good, like the wild ending that say Josef Newgarden take the checkered flag for his first ever Indy 500 victory.
And some of it was not so good, like the three crashes within the final 16 laps of the race — the first of which nearly took the lives of multiple spectators.
On that 16th lap, Felix Rosenqvist lost control of his car and hit the wall, sending him spiraling down the track. Kyle Kirkwood was coming up behind Rosenqvist during the crash, and he was unable to avoid his out-of-control car, clipping the tire and sending it flying several yards into the air.
The tire could actually be seen clearing the safety net around the track before soaring right over dozens of spectators.

The race was red-flagged after this scary incident, and there were two more red-flags as well before Newgarden was eventually crowned champion.
Just another wild day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
