There will be another five-round match at UFC 300. At the historic event in Las Vegas, Justin Gaethje will defend his BMF championship against Max Holloway in a lightweight match.
UFC president Dana White made the announcement of Gaethje vs. Holloway on Tuesday night.
This is the first time the ceremonial BMF title will be defended, and it takes place over five rounds. The title was originally intended to be a one-off match for Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz at UFC 244 in 2019.
Gaethje then brought it back when he submitted Poirier at UFC 291 in July of last year. Gaethje wanted to hold out on fighting for a UFC lightweight title chance, even though Holloway had openly advocated for the BMF bout. Since 2019, Holloway has only lost to Alexander Volkanovski, the featherweight champion, once in an attempt to win the interim title against Poirier at lightweight.

Gaethje and Khabib Nurmagomedov fought each other for the UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 254 in October 2020. Gaethje put up a good fight, but in the second round, he was submitted via technical means—a triangle choke. In his MMA career, this was his first submission loss.
The last time Gaethje faced Charles Oliveira for the vacant UFC Lightweight Championship was at UFC 274 on May 7, 2022. Only Gaethje was left with a chance to win the crown when Oliveira was disqualified for missing weight. Gaethje eventually lost the fight by rear-naked choke submission in the opening round, despite taking down Oliveira twice.
