The UFC’s Lightweight championship still belongs to Dagestani Islam Makhachev, who beat Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 302 on Saturday. As the thrilling UFC event concludes, the Irish megastar Conor Mcgregor heads the next major PPV event. Conor has fought many famed opponents in the cage and has won titles in two different divisions.
Weeks before his fight in the octagon, we look at the time when the Dublin native finished Lightweight ace Dustin Poirier in quite an impressive fashion.
When Conor McGregor KO’d Dustin Poirier
Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier go way back in the UFC. Both have been at the top of the Lightweight division for years and have fought for the title on many different occasions. McGregor and Poirier faced in the year 2014 for the first time in the octagon. Conor hit Dustin with a ton of verbal jabs before the fight. Poirier was visibly annoyed by his opponent’s shenanigans.
The former champion spectacularly finished Poirier in the first round of their fight. Dustin admitted that Conor got into his head with his words after the battle. In the years following the fight, Conor gained the reputation of being one of the most precise fighters and the most brutal trash talker. McGregor, after beating the Louisiana native, went on to win two titles in the UFC, etching his status as a UFC legend.
McGregor and Poirier met many years later, and Dustin had his revenge, finishing Conor both times in the octagon. Poirier was a different beast when he fought the future Hall of Famer in the cage for the second and third time. In a recent interview, Poirier claimed that he is not interested in fighting Conor in the cage in near future. It will be interesting to see if the two legends decide to clash in the octagon ever again.
