In just a few days, UFC fans are gearing up for one of the biggest heavyweight matchups in the organization’s history, as Jon Jones takes on Stipe Miocic. Both fighters have solidified their legendary status in the UFC, making this showdown iconic. Not only is the fight monumental due to the fighters’ legacies, but it could also mark the final appearance for both in the Octagon. Recently, however, Jones hinted that if he were to fight again after this, it wouldn’t be against Tom Aspinall but rather Alex Pereira.
In a recent conversation with Kevin Iole, Jon Jones stated that he feels Tom Aspinall hasn’t proven himself yet and that he’s not interested in risking his legacy to boost someone else’s name. Instead, if there’s a fight worth pursuing with someone still on the UFC roster—both financially and legacy-wise—it would be against Alex Pereira.
He stated, “I feel like Tom Aspinall is, I don’t want to say nobody, but he just hasn’t proven anything. He hasn’t done anything. I’m not here to gamble someone else making a name off of me. If there were to be a fight of a guy that’s still on our UFC roster that would be not only financially worth it but legacy worth it, it would be Alex Pereira.”
At 37, both Jones and Pereira are close in age. The UFC HW champion currently weighs around 235 pounds, making him a relatively light heavyweight compared to Pereira, who likely weighs about 240 pounds. Consequently, Jones believes that a fight with Pereira would do far more for his legacy than facing a younger fighter whose popularity might fade quickly.
