It looks like the bantamweight division has turned into the new lightweight division, with competition being just as intense. Among all the rising stars, Umar Nurmagomedov has been the talk of the bantamweight division, with potential matchups against several opponents, including champion Merab Dvalishvili. Recently, news emerged that Khabib’s cousin would fight Song Yadong, but Urijah Faber denied these rumors, confirming they are untrue.
Speaking of UFC legend Urijah Faber, he’s the head coach of Song Yadong, so there’s no doubt he’s in the loop on what’s happening with the Chinese fighter. In a recent conversation with Helen Yee, the former UFC fighter stated that the rumored December matchup hasn’t been booked and is simply speculation.
He stated, “We don’t have a date for that yet. I don’t think December 14th is the date that we’ve talked about. I think maybe January is what we’re looking at. Nothing’s been signed. The date has not been agree upon.”
Furthermore, Faber also mentioned that rather than December, he believes the fight could take place in January or even later in 2025. There’s no doubt it would be an exciting matchup between two rising stars in the bantamweight division.
Merab Dvalishvili Is Ready To Fight Umar Nurmagomedov Or Anyone
There’s no question that everyone in the division has their sights set on the belt, and with Umar not landing a fight, rumors have swirled that Merab might be avoiding him. However, Merab addressed those claims head-on, saying he’s a company man and ready to fight whoever the UFC offers—whether it’s Sean O’Malley, Umar, or anyone else.
In his words, “Guys- I hear all of you! I am a company man. Whoever the UFC puts in front of me, I will fight as I always do. Even if I don’t think they deserve the next shot. Let’s Go.”
