It seems UFC champions can never escape criticism. The moment someone claims the belt, contenders are quick to mock them. Belal Muhammad faced it, and now it’s Merab Dvalishvili’s turn. This time, it’s Umar Nurmagomedov taking aim at ‘The Machine’, calling him out for his hypocritical double standards.
Dvalishvili recently became the bantamweight champ at UFC 306, beating Sean O’Malley by decision. However, ‘The Young Eagle,’ who’s likely next in line to face Dvalishvili, didn’t hold back. He called out Dvalishvili for his hypocrisy, pointing out that Merab didn’t criticize Ilia Topuria’s fast track to a featherweight title shot after beating just one ranked fighter.
“When Merab’s friend, Topuria fought for the title, after 6 consecutive wins, and beating only one top 5 ranked opponent Josh Emmet, I don’t remember that Merab was desperately protesting against such ‘unfairness’”, Umar posted on X.
In the past, Merab Dvalishvili has criticized Umar Nurmagomedov for relying on his cousin, Khabib Nurmagomedov, to fast-track his success in the UFC. Dvalishvili also stated that ‘The Young Eagle’ doesn’t deserve a title shot just yet, claiming that other fighters, like Deiveson Figueiredo, are more worthy of that opportunity.
Merab Dvalishvili Claims Deiveson Figueiredo More Deserving Than Umar Nurmagomedov
Dvalishvili put on a dominant display against Sean O’Malley, capturing the bantamweight title at Noche UFC 306. When asked if Umar would be his first title defense, Dvalishvili said he’d discuss it with UFC CEO Dana White before making a decision.
Umar, who was in the crowd, was hoping to hear his name mentioned during Dvalishvili’s post-fight interview, but it didn’t happen. Additionally, at the post-fight presser, Dvalishvili explained why he’s eyeing Deiveson Figueiredo as his next opponent, saying:

“I think Figueiredo would be my fifth champion on my list. He is more dangerous, knockout power, good jiu-jitsu, makes people sleep. Coming from three straight wins, top guys, that’s why this fight excites me, makes me motivated, makes me work hard.”
Many believe Dvalishvili is dodging a fight with Umar, but ‘The Machine’ has explained his reasons for wanting Figueiredo instead. The future remains uncertain for both Umar and Dvalishvili, and until an official fight announcement is made, fans will enjoy the online back-and-forth.
