Living up to a legendary family name can be a blessing and a curse. Just ask Umar Nurmagomedov, the rising UFC bantamweight star. He’s been making waves in the octagon, but there’s always that lingering comparison to his cousin – the undefeated lightweight GOAT, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The young fighter recently opened up about the challenges of being a Nurmagomedov in the fight game. It’s not all glamor and glory. The pressure is real, and it’s intense. Talking on the Pound 4 Pound Podcast, Umar Nurmagomedov gave his two cents on the impact of his name on his career.
“Khabib would maul everyone….People see a Nurmagomedov will fight and they think we’re gonna do the same. When we win, they say ahh it’s like a regular fighter, he just win this.”
Umar Nurmgaomedov has skills, and he is the #2 ranked bantamweight for a reason. But living in Khabib’s shadow? It’s like trying to outshine the sun with a flashlight. Even the current lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, with such a dominant run, is still under the shadow of ‘The Eagle’s’ wings.
The expectations are sky-high. Fans want to see the same mauling style that made Khabib famous. But Umar is his own fighter. He’s got his own style, his own journey. Still, the comparisons persist, and they will probably last for his entire career.

Umar recently spilled the beans on the Pound 4 Pound podcast as he sat down with Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo. The big reveal was that UFC bigwigs Dana White and Hunter Campbell have promised him a title shot.
“They say to me that I’m next but I don’t want to wait (for) these two guys until next year. I want to fight! Hey guys, I don’t care about you, I just need belt!” said Nuramgomedov.
This news comes hot on the heels of some serious back-and-forth. Merab Dvalishvili hasn’t been too keen on giving Umar a shot. He’s been playing hard to get, claiming Umar Nurmagomedov hasn’t earned his stripes yet. Only time will tell if the UFC honors this alleged deal with the #2 contender.
