A new contender has emerged in the stacked bantamweight division, and he’s not pulling any punches. Umar Nurmagomedov, fresh off his impressive victory over Cory Sandhagen, has thrown down the gauntlet to the division’s elite, namely Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili. And boy, does he sound confident!
The ‘Young Eagle’ sports an unblemished 18-0 record as he carries the weight of the legendary Nurmagomedov name. He recently declared he can take out the current champion and the number-one contender with ease. As such, he is not worries about the outcome of their fight.
“I’m next for the title. I will fight for the title next. Doesn’t matter if it’s going to be Merab [Dvalishvili] or [Sean] O’Malley, be careful guys, I’m coming for you… I want to fight both of them. I’m scared of no one. Doesn’t matter, I will smash them both,” said Nurmagomedov.
Umar’s recent performance against the #2 ranked Sandhagen was nothing short of spectacular. He showcased excellent striking prowess in conjunction with his grappling-heavy game as he landed a career-high 98 significant strikes to prove it. It seems the Dagestani fighter has been cooking up more than just sambo in his training camp.
But let’s not forget the men he’s calling out. The current bantamweight champ, Sean O’Malley, dazzles with his flashy striking and even flashier personality. Then there’s Merab Dvalishvili, a whirlwind of endless cardio and takedowns. UFC 306 in September will feature these two clashing in what promises to be a bantamweight barnburner. The victor of their clash will potentially be the target for Nurmagomedov. Till then, he can bask in the glory of his recent win.
