Daniel Rodriguez returned from a doping suspension at UFC Saudi Arabia but lost to Kelvin Gastelum. Initially scheduled as a welterweight fight, Gastelum’s potential weight miss forced the UFC to change it to a middleweight fight after an annoyed Rodriguez agreed.
Fortunately for Rodriguez, he reaped the rewards for accepting a fight on short notice at a higher weight class. Dana White and the UFC have always taken care of fighters who take risks, and Rodriguez was the latest beneficiary of it.
Daniel Rodriguez Finds Silver Lining
Daniel Rodriguez lost to Kelvin Gastelum via unanimous decision at UFC Saudi Arabia. The loss was his third in a new row after a four-fight winning streak. Despite the loss, Rodriguez received benefits from the UFC, which he revealed via his official Instagram.
“I lost the fight but I gained so much more in return. Ton of respect for the fight community. A nice raises 6-fight contract. 30 percent of his [Kelvin Gastelum] fu**ing [purse],” said Rodriguez via Instagram stories, revealing he and his family are proud of his performance in Riyadh.
Rodriguez is one of the most exciting fighters in the welterweight division. The 37-year-old had a rough childhood and had even served time. MMA helped the Californian turn over a new leaf. Nicknamed “D-Rod,” Rodriguez was the SG Welterweight Championship before signing with the UFC.
As for Gastelum, Dana White, the UFC CEO, was furious at the former interim middleweight title challenger for the weight miss. Gastelum also received scathing criticism from analysts and commentators at UFC Saudi Arabia.
