Kelvin Gastelum’s re-debut at welterweight ended in a submission loss to Sean Brady at UFC Austin. Gastelum was to fight Daniel Rodrigues in a welterweight matchup in UFC Saudi Arabia but couldn’t make weight. Chris Curtis, a former Gastelum opponent, had something to say about it.
Gastelum fought Curtis in a middleweight bout at UFC 287, winning unanimously. Curtis had been critical of Gastelum since then, blaming Gastelum for a headbutt in the fight. When Gastelum missed weight, it didn’t take long for Curtis to roast Gastelum.
Gastelum’s Weight Miss and Curtis’ Critique
“Lazy, undisciplined, and lucky as hell. The Kelvin Gastelum Story,” Curtis tweeted on X, subtly hinting Gastelum’s victory over him at UFC 287 was due to luck. Nonetheless, Gastelum’s weight miss didn’t affect the fight, as Daniel Rodrigues agreed to a middleweight bout.
Gastelum once challenged Israel Adesanya for the interim middleweight championship at UFC 236. However, he went 2-4 at middleweight after the loss to Adesanya. Gastelum’s middleweight move was on the backdrop of his weight misses at welterweight, and it now appears to haunt him again.
As for Curtis, he fought thrice after the loss to Gastelum, going 1-1(1). In his recent fight at UFC Vegas 90, Curtis lost a close split decision to Brendan Allen in a short-notice main event. It was a rematch of UFC Vegas 44, where Curtis TKOed Allen in the second round.
Curtis is a close friend of Sean Strickland, the former middleweight champion. Strickland had urged Curtis to move to welterweight, citing his relatively smaller stature than average middleweights. Curtis has fought at welterweight with success before but has only fought at middleweight in the UFC.
