Alexa Grasso upset the odds to dethrone Valentina Shevchenko, the long-reigning women’s flyweight champion, at UFC 285. Grasso defended the title at UFC Noche in 2023, albeit via a controversial split draw. The Mexican is coaching opposite Shevchenko at The Ultimate Fighter Season 32, preluding their trilogy fight.
Grasso Poses at Las Vegas Sphere, Gears Up for UFC 306
Alexa Grasso recently posed in front of the Las Vegas Sphere with her championship belt, confirming her presence at UFC 306. As the only remaining Mexican champion in the promotion, Grasso was a sure shot to fight at the coveted PPV. However, her opponent, Shevchenko, had reservations about the location.
Many felt the judges robbed Shevchenko the last time they fought at UFC Noche. The former flyweight champion also felt the pro-Mexican atmosphere of UFC Noche influenced the decision. Therefore, the 36-year-old expressed her disinterest. It seems like Grasso is keen on fighting at the Sphere, even if it is not against the former long-reigning champion.
If Valentina Shevchenko won’t fight at UFC 306, Grasso has already located her next opponent – Manon Fiorot. Undefeated in the UFC, Fiorot secured the next title shot with a dominant victory over Erin Blanchfield at UFC Atlantic City. Moreover, the Frenchwoman had expressed interest in being a backup for Grasso vs. Shevchenko III.
Nevertheless, the women’s flyweight title won’t likely headline UFC 306. Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili for the undisputed bantamweight title will likely be the main event of the PPV. Moreover, a potential lightweight debut of Brian Ortega will also happen, depending on his performance against Diego Lopes at UFC 303.
