Israel Adesanya grew into a Mixed Martial Artist under the watchful eye of Eugene Bareman. In addition to Adesanya, several UFC fighters train under Bareman at City Kickboxing. Bareman has a unique take on matters, evidenced by his dry Kiwi humor.
Bareman recently appeared in an interview on Combat TV, where he discussed his fighters’ upcoming fights and made an interesting point about the UFC fighter rankings.
Eugene Bareman: Top 15 Light Heavyweights All Top Tier
Carlos Ulberg, a fighter under Bareman, had an opponent change for UFC 303. Ulberg will now have to face Anthony Smith, ranked 10th, instead of Jamahal, the 3rd-ranked light heavyweight. However, Bareman does not see Smith’s quality as inferior to Hill’s.
“The nature of the top 15 is what separates the number two, number four, and number 15 is nothing. Number 15 could easily be number four, or number 12 could be number two. Nothing separates these guys. There is a number next to these guys’ names, but it’s got nothing to do with the quality of the opponent. They’re all just the best guys in the world,” said Bareman.
Bareman even stated a matchup against Smith might be a harder stylistic matchup than Hill. However, he did admit that Conor McGregor’s absence is a slight blow, considering the eyeballs associated with the presence of McGregor.
Adesanya, Bareman’s prized pupil, once unsuccessfully challenged Jan Blachowicz, then-light heavyweight champion. Bareman might do it with Ulberg, who is on a 6-fight winning streak and a 5-fight fight-finishing streak.
