All signs point to Dricus Du Plessis’s first title defense will be against Israel Adesanya at UFC 305. One fighter with experience fighting both is Robert Whittaker, the former champion in the division. Whittaker is 0-2 against Adesanya and 0-1 against du Plessis.
Whittaker has not lost any other middleweight other than Adesanya and du Plessis. Both fighters have finished Whittaker. However, he might get another crack at the middleweight title, if victorious against Ikram Aliskerov at UFC Saudi Arabia.
Robert Whittaker Predicts Potential UFC 305 Main Event
Robert Whittaker recently spoke with TalkSport where he previewed du Plessis vs. Adesanya. “You know what? I’m going to lean towards Dricus just pressuring him and making a bit of a dog fight, and beating Adesanya that way. I can see that happening,” said Whittaker.
Nevertheless, the UFC has not yet announced the fight between du Plessis and Adesanya. However, UFC CEO Dana White unknowingly revealed their plans on one of his fight announcements. Moreover, Adesanya announced the fight via his Instagram channel.
Odds for the fight has not yet opened. However, the MMA community has leaned toward du Plessis, citing his awkward pressure fighting style a nightmare matchup for the Kiwi. Moreover, du Plessis also has a ground game to go on with his powerful striking game.
Dricus du Plessis is undefeated in the UFC. On the other hand, Adesanya is 2-2 in his last four fights. Nevertheless, Adesanya is optimistic for his return, and potentially becoming the undisputed middleweight champion a third time.
