UFC 303 looked like an exciting PPV. However, Conor McGregor pulled out of the main event, forcing the UFC to book Alex Pereira vs. Jiri Prochazka II as the main event. Moreover, they added Diego Lopes vs. Brian Ortega as the co-main event.
Jamahal Hill vs. Khalil Rountree Jr. was the original main event, but Rountree pulled out due to a doping violation. Carlos Ulberg replaced Rountree on short notice, but Hill pulled out due to injury. Funnily enough, Anthony Smith, Hill’s close friend and training partner, replaced him.
Roman Dolidze Rumored to Replace Carlos Ulberg at UFC 303
Smith vs. Ulberg had all the potential for an exciting fight. Ulberg was on a 6-fight winning streak, the last 5 via finish. On the other hand, Smith, a former title challenger, was coming off a first-round submission of then-undefeated Vitor Petrino. Unfortunately, the fight is not happening.
Ulberg has now pulled out of the fight, and there are rumors that Roman Dolidze has replaced him. The Kiwi had an injury going into his previous battle against Alonzo Menifield. However, he had finished the fight early in the first round.
The UFC has not yet officially announced Dolidze as the replacement. Even though he is ranked middleweight, Dolidze has competed as high as a heavyweight. Moreover, his first two fights in the UFC were at light heavyweight.
The removal of Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler was a big blow to UFC 303. The removal of Ulberg, an exciting contender, from the card has also affected the PPV card. Nonetheless, Dolidze is an apt replacement.
