After Alex Pereira knocked out Jiri Prochazka for the second time in seven months, “Poatan” looks unbeatable. With victories over former champions Jan Blachowicz, Jamahal Hill, and Prochazka, the Brazilian is 4-0 against the top 5 light heavyweights. In this scenario, only Magomed Ankalaev, the 2nd ranked light heavyweight, seems to be the only intriguing challenger for the title.
Ankalaev’s Stand-Up Battle Proposal
Ankalaev opened as a sizeable betting favorite for the potential fight against Pereira. However, money has flowed in Pereira’s direction, and the odds have fluctuated. The Russian is the only top-10 light heavyweight with good wrestling, Pereira’s weak spot. This is also the reason for his favorite betting status. Interestingly, Ankalaev has other ideas for his fight against the champion.
Since defeating Johnny Walker, Magomed Ankalaev has been hot on the heels of Alex Pereira. After the Brazilian triumphed over Jiri Prochazka at UFC 303, the Russian has upped his social media game, frequently calling out the champion. “AlexPereiraUFC, I will make a deal. First 15 minutes no takedowns,” tweeted Ankalaev.
Striking with Pereira in MMA is something no coach would advise. Ankalaev’s suggestion is likely to make the fight happen. Funnily enough, Ankalaev had the opportunity to become the champion, but his fight against Jan Blachowicz at UFC 282 ended in a split draw. He did not become the champion because he chose to strike with the Pole in the first 15 minutes.
If Ankalaev had wrestled in the first three rounds against Blachowicz as he did in the 4th and 5th, he would’ve become the champion. Moreover, Blachowicz significantly hurt Ankalev with leg kicks, Pereira’s area of expertise. If Ankalaev does what he says he will, it will be a short night for the Dagestani light heavyweight in the potential title fight against Alex Pereira.
