Ian Machado Garry kept his undefeated record intact with a close decision victory over Michael ‘Venom’ Page at UFC 303. Despite losing to the Irishman, the former Bellator welterweight doesn’t consider Garry a threat to the current UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards.
“Not at all. If that’s the game you’re going with, when you get a decent striker, then Leon’s going to kill you anyway. Then Shavkat’s going to kill you anyway. There’s a few guys in there that I just don’t see him surpassing,” Page replied to Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour when asked about Garry’s championship potential.
Venom admitted ‘The Future’ is a talented fighter, but the Brit didn’t see the Irishman elevating beyond the top 5 or 10 of the welterweight rankings. Moreover, the 37-year-old accused Garry of stealing the win at UFC 303 rather than engaging in a combat game to cause damage. Furthermore, he revealed Garry didn’t feel strong in the fight.
Page Discusses Strategy Shift in Garry Fight
In the post-fight press conference of UFC 303, Dana White revealed he felt the matchup between Page and Garry was a draw. Nonetheless, Garry’s game plan worked as he employed grappling. The Irishman had predicted a knockout of his opponent but couldn’t get past the Brit’s range. The 37-year-old spoke about it on the MMA Hour.
“No matter what people say about how good they claim to be as a striker, when they stand in front of me, everything changes. They go for plan Zed, and I see that every single time I fight someone who claims to be a credible striker. Every single time, they turn into wrestlers or jiu-jitsu practitioners,” Page said.
After the victory at UFC 303, Garry called out Shavkat Rakhmonov. The pair are forming teammates at Kill Cliff FC. Despite being only 2 fights into his UFC career, Page has become a fan favorite. Therefore, he will likely face somebody in the top 10 or 15 next.
