The dust has settled on UFC 300, but the fight remains the town’s talk. As such, Justin Gaethje is still processing his epic clash against Max Holloway. The last-second knockout was an epic moment that will probably go down in history as one of the best fights ever.
Gaethje is known for his all-out war style. He found himself unable to use his strengths against Holloway. The elusive Holloway fought perfectly and, despite arguably winning all rounds on the judges’ scorecard, implied Gaethje to brawl in the final seconds of the fifth round. Gaethje recently talked about this fight on the Anik & Florian Podcast:
“My gameplan wasn’t necessarily the correct gameplan, but that’s only something you could know after the fact, and I think he [Max Holloway] fought an amazing fight. He was very precise and perfect that night. You know, a very tough Max Holloway to beat.”

Holloway brought a version of himself that even ‘The Highlight’ wasn’t fully prepared for. Gaethje admitted his game plan might not have been the best approach. He further stated that he should have pressured more and tried to move forward as much as possible.
The BMF fight was awarded the Fight of the Night. This meant that both fighters took home the $300,000 bonus, which was a significant raise from the usual $50,000. On top of that, ‘Blessed’ was awarded the Performance of the Night Bonus, adding a total of $600,000 in bonuses to his fight purse.

Gaethje talked about his desire to fight anyone from any era. He revealed that he had already fought most fighters, including Edson Barbosa, Dustin Poirier, and Max Holloway. However, ‘The Highlight’ blamed recency bias and revealed that he would love to rematch Max Holloway. This is what he stated:
“I wouldn’t mind getting the Max [Holloway] fight back, but that’s probably because of recency bias from my last loss, so you always want that one back. I got Poirier beat me, and I got to get that one back. That was nice. Give it a redemption. Not often do you get that chance in the sport.”

Gaethje’s desire for a do-over isn’t just about settling a score. It’s a testament to the respect he has for Holloway’s skills. Before the Holloway fight, Gaethje secured the vacant BMF belt in a rematch against Dustin Poirier. He knocked out the Louisiana native with a head kick in Round 2, sending him straight to the canvas. Gaethje would love to have another go at Holloway and, like Poirier, may settle the score in the rematch.
