Michael ‘Venom’ Page’s UFC debut resulted in a decision victory over Kevin Holland. Scheduled to fight Ian Garry at UFC 303, Page aspires to fight former champion Kamaru Usman, number one on the welterweight rankings, next.
Usman has not won since he defeated Colby Covington at UFC 268. In his next fight, he lost the welterweight title to Leon Edwards and went on to lose the subsequent fights against Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev.
Page Confident in Title Path Through Usman, Ready for Garry Test
Michael ‘Venom’ Page was a short-notice replacement at UFC 303 against Ian Garry, with Colby Covington rumored to be the original opponent. Nonetheless, Page has no qualms about it as he envisions fighting Kamaru Usman afterward. He revealed the reason for it in a recent interview with MMA Junkie’s Farah Hannoun.
“I have to fight somebody that guarantees me fighting for the belt next. I think that’s a fight [against Kamaru Usman] that guarantees me fighting for the belt next. It’s more to do with the position, obviously his name and status. There are a few things, but other than that, it’s not a personal thing,” said Page, suggesting the fight would excite the fans.
For Page to fight Usman, he must fight and dispatch Ian Garry, who is undefeated in professional MMA. Moreover, Garry is a slight betting favorite in the fight. Nonetheless, fight fans have picked Page to win a striking battle against Garry.
However, Garry is now a teammate of Charles Oliveira at ChuteBoxe in Brazil. Therefore, Garry might incorporate grappling in his fight against Page. Moreover, unlike Garry, Page has accepted the fight on short notice.
