Robert Whittaker is one of the best middleweight fighters in the UFC. His exciting fighting style and humble demeanor have garnered a unique fan base. Even in Saudi Arabia, Whittaker has enjoyed fan support.
Whittaker will put his rankings on the line at UFC Saudi Arabia against Ikram Aliskerov, an unranked short-notice replacement. Surprisingly, the Aussie found fans cheering for him in Saudi Arabia, surprising the media members.
Whittaker’s Unexpected Support in Riyadh
When enquired about the ‘cult following’ of Whittaker in Riyadh, who cheered the Aussie on with his signature ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie’ chants, Whittaker had wholeheartedly a response. He didn’t expect this type of support from the Saudi fans.
” The Aussie Aussie Aussie chants, I loved them. I could tell they weren’t Aussie. It was great. To have that support here, it meant the world to me,” Whittaker said of the Saudi fans who cheered him on at the open workouts.
As for his fight against Aliskerov, Whittaker is not taking the Dagestani lightly. Many have stated Aliskerov as a tougher MMA matchup for Whittaker than Khamzat Chimaev. Even Whittaker has admitted that is the case.
Gilbert Burns, Renato Moicano, and others have predicted Aliskerov to beat Whittaker. However, Israel Adesanya, a former foe of Whittaker, predicted an easy victory for the Aussie, possibly in the later rounds.
