At the UFC 302 post-fight press conference, a comment by UFC CEO Dana White sparked a new controversy among fans and fighters. White’s response stirred debate when asked to choose between Islam Makhachev and Jon Jones for the pound-for-pound top spot as the UFC President picked the latter.
Although Islam Makhachev is currently ranked number one, Jones, the UFC heavyweight champion, previously held the position before being injured last year. In response, Makhachev posted a mocking message about Jones, further fueling the controversy.
Islam Makhachev Mocks Jon Jones Amid Pound-for-Pound Rankings Debate
Makhachev compared his UFC stats from 2021 to the present with Jon Jones’s stats. Since 2021, Islam Makhachev has defeated top fighters like Dustin Poirier, Alexander Volkanovski, Charles Oliveira, Bobby Green, Dan Hooker, and Thiago Moises, while Jon Jones has only defeated Ciryl Gane.
In the press conference, Dana White said, “For anybody to call Islam the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world when Jon Jones is still f*ck fighting is nuts and shouldn’t be ranking in the pound-for-pound or doing any of the f*ck rankings ever.”
Makhachev, the current UFC lightweight champion, was recently seen in action at UFC 302. Which took place on June 1st at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
