Conor McGregor is out of his scheduled matchup against Michael Chandler at UFC 303. An undisclosed injury has halted McGregor’s anticipated return after three years. Chandler had sat out two years for the fight, which unfortunately didn’t materialize.
With McGregor out of action, the UFC pulled a rabbit out of its hat. A light heavyweight title fight, a rematch of UFC 295 between Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka, is now the main event. To add spice to the event, they have added an exciting matchup between Diego Lopes and Brian Ortega.
Will Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler headline UFC 306?
Chael Sonnen stated that Conor McGregor wouldn’t return to fight if he didn’t fight Michael Chandler at UFC 303. McGregor has amassed much wealth outside the Octagon but has repeatedly stated his desire to fight inside it. Therefore, there is a high likelihood of McGregor fighting again.
Ariel Helwani stated McGregor’s injury was not severe. Since McGregor fought with an injury and broke his leg at UFC 264, his team didn’t want to repeat past mistakes. As per Helwani, the UFC already has fights scheduled for UFC 306. Therefore, McGregor vs. Chandler is less likely to headline the PPV event at the Las Vegas Sphere.
The PPV headliners for UFC 304, 305, 308, and 309 are almost clear. UFC 306 and 307 remain. Rumors on social media suggest that McGregor is headlining UFC 306 against Chandler. McGregor had expressed interest in fighting at the Sphere after UFC 303. Moreover, McGregor won’t likely be fighting at UFC 307, potentially at the high altitude of Salt Lake City.
Dana White had already promised a blockbuster event at the Sphere. What better way to headline the event than with Conor McGregor’s return? That would mean championship fights would be on the co-main event. McGregor had already done that at UFC 196. As such, it might likely happen again at UFC 306.
