For Chael Sonnen, Max Holloway vs. Ilia Topuria is the UFC’s best-kept secret. Sources differ as to when the fight will happen. A French-Canadian UFC broadcast partner leaked the matchup to headline UFC 306 at the Las Vegas Sphere. However, Ariel Helwani refuted it, claiming UFC 307 at Salt Lake City is the venue. Nonetheless, recent developments in the fight game have made Sonnen think Topuria is out of the fight and Holloway will put his BMF title on the line against a former opponent.
“Dana tweeted out, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to do a BMF title at the Sphere? Now when Dana said that, I didn’t know how to interpret it….. I don’t think Dana would speak that way. I’m worried that he lost Ilia Topuria, but if he lost Ilia Topuria and he’s keeping Max Holloway, allow me to be first to try to insert the name opposite Max. Charles Oliveira, you heard it here first.” Sonnen said at the Good Guy/Bad Guy YouTube show.
Daniel Cormier, Sonnen’s co-host, agreed with the assessment. The former two-division champion revealed that the UFC had already planned for Oliveira to fight at UFC 306 against Brian Ortega, who would make his debut in lightweight. However, Ortega accepted a short-notice fight at UFC 300, resulting in health complications.
Due to the pressure-fighting style, Oliveira vs. Holloway II will be entertaining. Even though ‘Blessed’ TKOed ‘Do Bronx’ at featherweight, the rematch at lightweight will likely have the Brazilian as a betting favorite over the Hawaiian.
Sonnen and Cormier Discuss Female BMF Title Fight
Recently, several female UFC fighters have become vocal about the need to introduce a BMF belt for women. Kayla Harrison, Rose Namajunas, Julianna Pena, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, and others have made their feelings known about the female BMF title.
In the recent Good Guy/Bad Guy episode, Chael Sonnen and Daniel Cormier pondered the possibility of a female BMF title fight at UFC 306 on the Las Vegas Sphere. For the duo, a trilogy fight between Namajunas and Jedrzejczyk seemed possible.
Although Namajunas is 2-0 against the Polish woman, a third fight would be exciting, particularly as Jedrzejczyk is a recent Hall of Fame inductee.
