After an okay PPV event at Newark, New Jersey, the UFC will move to Louisville, Kentucky, for an exciting fight night card headlined by Jared Cannonier and Nassourdine Imavov. The middleweight matchup is significant as both have a history with current number-one contender Sean Strickland.
Cannonier holds a split-decision victory over Strickland, the former champion in the division. On the other hand, Imavov lost to Strickland in a short-notice light heavyweight bout via unanimous decision. A victory at Louisville will put either close to title contention.
Jared Cannonier Threatens Nassourdine Imavov
Like Conor McGregor, Cannonier has won by TKO in three divisions in the UFC. After unsuccessful spells at heavyweight and light heavyweight, Cannonier found his footing at middleweight. Born in Dagestan but raised in France, Imavov has found success after he changed training camps. Moreover, he is a betting favorite against Cannonier. Nonetheless, Cannonier seemed nonchalant.
“Nassourdine [Imavov] is evasive in his approach to mixed martial arts, so I won’t be head hunting, that’s for damn sure. You know what I mean? But his legs are going to be there for the taking, for the kicking, and his body and soul are going to be there for the taking. And once I build my way up from there, I plan on knocking him out, finishing him,” said Cannonier in the interview with ESPN MMA.
Cannonier clarified he wouldn’t look for the finish but would welcome it via KO, submission, doctor stoppage, or corner stoppage. Moreover, he predicted that the UFC Louisville fight would likely be similar to when he fought Strickland at UFC Vegas 66.
Strickland defeated Paulo Costa in the recently concluded UFC 302 PPV co-main event. If victorious against Imavov, Cannonier could call out Strickland for a rematch to determine the next number-one contender at middleweight.
