Alex Pereira has risen second in the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings, leaving Jon Jones at number 3. Already a two-division champion in the promotion, many felt a heavyweight title triumph over Jones or Tom Aspinall would make him the GOAT of MMA and the pound-for-pound best.
Jones will defend the undisputed heavyweight title at UFC 309 in November. In a few weeks, Aspinall will defend the interim title at UFC 304 in London. Interestingly, the Brit and the American seem interested in welcoming the Brazilian to the heavyweight division.
Aspinall Impressed by Pereira
‘Poatan’ expressed interest in challenging the heavyweight UFC title after his victory over Jiri Prochazka at UFC 303. Speaking to TalkSport MMA, Tom Aspinall revealed his interest in a potential matchup against the Glory Kickboxing Hall of Famer.
“I’m not shying away from anybody, so if the UFC wants to do that, I’m more than happy to do it. As an elite-level fighter myself, you can’t help but be impressed with what Alex Pereira has done over the past couple of years,” said Aspinall, who seemed focused on his upcoming fight at UFC 304.
“I absolutely want to fight him, but I’m not jumping ahead of things right now. I’m fighting Curtis Blaydes now, and if that’s what the UFC wants to do one day, then we’ll absolutely do it,” Aspinall added, revealing he respects Pereira for what he has done in the sport.
With Jon Jones likely to retire at UFC 309, Aspinall will likely be the undisputed champion by the beginning of 2025. A potential matchup with Pereira will be a massive event by then. Aspinall has opened as the betting favorite for the fight, but ‘Poatan’ can knock anybody out cold.
