Jared Cannonier’s two-fight winning streak at middleweight stopped at UFC Louisville. Nassourdine Imavov secured a fourth-round TKO victory, though the MMA community scrutinized the referee Jason Herzog’s stoppage, which many felt was early.
When Herzog stopped the fight, Cannonier led on the judge’s scorecard. Cannonier had looked for a title shot if victorious against Imavov. With the loss, Cannonier fell to fifth in the rankings; Imavov moved from seventh to fourth.
Jared Cannonier Frustrated by Loss to Nassourdine Imavov
Cannonier recently appeared on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour, calling for a rematch with Imavov at UFC Paris. He also revealed that Mick Maynard, the matchmaker, was interested in the idea. Moreover, Cannonier revealed he had watched the stoppage of Jason Herzog multiple times, which left him gut-wrenched.
“I think the ref was more elevated by the whole thing than I was. I was in sort of autopilot, like, okay, this is a bad situation to be in, but I’ve been here before. So, this is where I recover and then try to mount the offense back to take the pressure off of me. It’s frustrating as hell to go back and watch it every time. I’ve watched it like seven or eight times, and it’s frustrating as hell every time,” said Cannonier.
Cannonier admitted Imavov’s right hook threw his equilibrium away. However, he stated he was in recovery mode and landed a countershot before Herzog stopped the fight. Cannonier felt the fight would’ve won a Fight of the Night bonus if it had gone on.
Before the fight, Cannonier had suffered physical and emotional damage. He had a medical emergency due to an allergy. Moreover, his wife miscarried, adding a toll on his mind. To make matters worse, Cannonier didn’t get a potential win bonus at UFC Louisville.
