The UFC’s welterweight division has slowly become one of the best in the division. Leon Edwards, the champion, is on a 13-fight unbeaten streak. Belal Muhammad, Edwards’ next challenger, is on a 10-fight unbeaten streak. Moreover, rising contenders like Jack Della Maddalena, Shavkat Rakhmonov, and Ian Garry are undefeated in the UFC, and the latter two are undefeated in professional MMA.
Garry Seeks First Defeat of Rakhmonov
Garry recently competed at UFC 303, defeating Michael ‘Venom’ Page via unanimous decision. After the victory, Garry called out Rakhmonov at the post-fight press conference. The Irishman vowed to be the first fighter to defeat the Kazakhstan native in MMA. The callout did not go unnoticed by the 29-year-old ‘Nomad.’
“Looks like Ian forgot what happened during those training sessions. I don’t mind reminding him in the future,” Rakhmonov tweeted. Garry had trained with Rakhmonov at Kill Cliff MMA. Moreover, rumors circulated the 29-year-old knocked out the 26-year-old during sparring. However, Garry refuted those claims and claimed to be more talented than his fellow undefeated foe.
“When it comes to striking, I’m faster than him, more technical than him, and more talented than him. Is he amazing and fearless? Absolutely. But I know for a fact that if this fight is on the feet, I’m the one with the advantage. When it comes to grappling, he absolutely had the advantage over me when we trained,” Ian Garry said in his interview on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour.
Rumors speculate Rakhmonov’s next fight is against Kamaru Usman at the Las Vegas Sphere at UFC 306. If victorious, he will fight the winner of the UFC 304 main event title fight between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad. For Garry, the ideal scenario is for Shavkat Rakhmonov to become champion and then defeat the ‘Nomad.’
