Connor McGregor popularized the sport of mixed martial arts worldwide. He is also the wealthiest MMA fighter, and the opponents he faces receive a more oversized fight purse. McGregor proved that with his revelation of Michael Chandler’s fight purse.
The Mac has not fought since UFC 264, where he broke his tibia in the first round against Dustin Poirier. The UFC had scheduled his return at UFC 303, in the main event against Michael Chandler, but McGregor withdrew due to injury.
McGregor Slams Critics of Chandler’s Wait
After McGregor’s withdrawal, an overwhelming section of the MMA community urged Chandler to fight someone else. Some even criticized Chandler for waiting almost two years to fight McGregor. However, McGregor appeared to agree with the former’s decision.
“Chandler is getting paid 10x of what his contract states for other fights. Meaning he would need to fight 10 fights to make what he would make in this one. I’m The One,” tweeted McGregor on X, seemingly boasting the financial incentives of fighting him.
“For those saying he could have fought 2 or 3 times by now etc. He’d need 10 to break even with this cheque,” McGregor commented on the tweet, criticizing those who criticized Chandler’s decision to wait longer a fight with the Irishman.
After McGregor withdrew, Dana White sympathized with Chandler‘s predicament. Chandler appeared to look in other directions with a cryptic tweet, targeting a BMF title fight against Max “Blessed” Holloway.
