Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski were integral in the New England Patriots dynasty. Brady is a close friend of Dana White, the UFC CEO. Interestingly, Ben Askren, a former MMA champion, found a striking similarity between Brady and Rob Gronkowski and two UFC heavyweights.
The two heavyweights are Sergei Pavlovich, an ex-interim title challenger, and Alexander Volkov, a top 5 heavyweight. Incidentally, they will fight each other in the co-main of UFC Saudi Arabia, headlined by Robert Whittaker and Ikram Aliskerov.
Ben Askren Makes NFL Reference in UFC Friendship
When the UFC announced the fight between Volkov and Pavlovich, they didn’t inform the fighters. Both were friends and training partners and had not yet signed a contract to fight. Nonetheless, this did not affect their friendship, as evidenced by the picture of the two when they met in Riyadh.
“I’m gonna tell my kids this is Tom Brady and Gronk (Ron Gronkowski),” Ben Askren tweeted about the all-smiles picture of Volkov and Pavlovich. Interestingly, Askren’s assessment makes sense, as the two duos are strikingly similar.
Nonetheless, they are from different sports. Brady and Gronkowski complemented each other to win 4 Super Bowls. On the other hand, Volkov and Pavlovich will have to beat each other up for their dreams to come true. Pavlovich is the favorite to win, but Volkov is on a three-fight win streak.
After Khamzat Chimaev pulled out from Saudi Arabia, Volkov vs. Pavlovich became the high-profile fight on the card. If victorious, the winner will likely get a title shot. If not, a number one contender fight will happen, possibly against Ciryl Gane or Jailton Almeida.
