Alex Pereira’s rise to superstardom in the UFC was extraordinary. The Brazilian fighter has become a global sensation despite his limited English literacy, particularly in English-speaking nations. Din Thomas recently revealed the reason for ‘Poatan’s’ stardom.
Thomas, a former UFC lightweight and current MMA coach, attended UFC 303, which was headlined by Pereira. Speaking to MMA Fighting’s Mike Heck, the veteran spoke highly of the UFC light heavyweight champion.
Din Thomas Impressed by Alex Pereira’s Impact in UFC
Din Thomas is still in awe of Alex Pereira’s success in MMA, citing that several credentialed kickboxers have entered the UFC but have failed. Thomas stated the walkout and knockouts of the 36-year-old have made him a fan favorite. He had an interesting theory of why it is so.
“For Alex, he’s doing exactly what he needs to do. If Alex were to come out and start talking trash, I don’t think the fans would like it. They’d be like, ‘Where’s our guy? That’s not our guy. Our guy is a silent killer. We like the silent killer,'” said Thomas.
The 47-year-old also praised the Glory Kickboxing Hall of Famer’s determination. He felt the Brazilian fighter had a cheat code in the form of Glover Teixeira, Chuck Liddell, and John Hackleman. Under Teixeira, Pereira has a strategic training approach.
As for the light heavyweight champion, Thomas thinks Pereira should fight Jon Jones for the undisputed heavyweight title next. He feels age has been catching up to ‘Bones, ‘ and Jones even seems to entertain the fight.
