Conor McGregor’s rise to stardom in the UFC, and transcended stardom in sports in general, was meteoric. McGregor became the biggest star in the UFC with his simultaneous two-division champion status and two-fight series with Nate Diaz. However, the Irishman has only won once in the past six years, which the 35-year-old appeared to remember fondly.
McGregor Retweets Cerrone Win
After he broke his left tibia at UFC 264 in the fight against Dustin Poirier, many thought it was the end of McGregor. However, the Irishman swiftly recovered, but tussles with the USADA prevented him from competing. Nonetheless, fight fans found immense joy when Dana White announced McGregor headlining UFC 303 against Michael Chandler.
Unfortunately, the Irishman withdrew from UFC 303 due to a toe injury, forcing the UFC to book Alex Pereira vs. Jiri Prochazka as the new main event. Nonetheless, McGregor is eager to return to the octagon. The former two-division champion retweeted a fan page post showing his victory over Donald Cerrone with the caption, “100% accuracy. 100% Conor McGregor.”
McGregor knocked out Cerrone in 40 seconds in a welterweight bout that headlined UFC 246. It is his only victory in the past six years. Since the bout was at welterweight, McGregor’s only victory at lightweight was his title fight against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, which broke several records at the Madison Square Garden.
After news of his withdrawal, McGregor attended Bellator Champions Series 3 in Dublin to corner Sinead Kavanagh, an SBG teammate. Dan Hardy interviewed McGregor at the venue, where the Irishman revealed he had fought with injuries before but won’t don it again. McGregor’s decision to withdraw garnered a mixed response from the MMA community.
