Carlos Prates knocked out veteran welterweight Neil Magny in the first round, but the finish raised some eyebrows. It was Prates’ fifth consecutive knockout victory. Although he dropped Magny earlier in the round, the final blow that sent Magny crashing seemed to be a left hook that grazed his temple rather than a clean hit, which is usually expected in knockouts like this.
The left hook landed on Magny’s head, not his chin. While punches to the chin typically cause fighters to wobble, a solid strike to the head can immediately put someone to sleep. Some fans took to social media, questioning Magny’s will to fight or even speculating that the fight was fixed. However, in the post-fight conference, ‘The Nightmare’ addressed the criticism, saying:
“On the head is different on the face. On the face you get a little bit dizzy. But on the head you cut your legs and don’t feel nothing and then you come back. So I think people talking s**t, they should come here and let me hit his head and then they’ll talk after.”
Additionally, ‘The Nightmare’ referenced his previous fight with Li Jingliang as an example for fans. He pointed out that the first knockdown in that fight was similar, where he hit Jingliang on the head and then he went down. Now, Prates is on a winning streak and reaching new heights in the division.
