Dustin Poirier, also known as ‘The Diamond,’ has an interesting nickname backstory. The American MMA fighter established himself as one of the best lightweight fighters in the UFC. However, his latest defeat against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 left fans speculating about his return to the octagon. Recently, the 35-year-old himself came out with a teaser video to reveal the name of the fighter whom he will fight next. In the same video, he revealed the origin of his moniker.
Full Violence recently shared a video on YouTube featuring Poirier. The UFC superstar was supposed to reveal his next opponent, but that was eventually left in suspense. The American did recall how he got his nickname, ‘The Diamond.’
Dustin Poirier credited former UFC fighter Tim Credeur for having nicknamed him ‘The Diamond.’ He described Credeur as a “pioneer” who was the Jiu-Jitsu black belt in the entire Louisiana. Moreover, he recalled that it was Credeur who handed him his black belt. The 35-year-old said,
“I actually got the nickname ‘Diamond’ from Tim Credeur, a former UFC fighter. He was on The Ultimate Fighter TV show… But he named me ‘The Diamond’ when I was still an amateur fighter.”
Continuing his story, Poirier recalled that Credeur put his nickname on the WEC form. He also revealed that he never had a moniker during his amateur career and at the beginning of his professional career.

After a disappointing loss against Islam Makhachev, ‘The Diamond’ confirmed not retiring from the combat sports. On the Jon Anik & Kenny Florian Podcast on DraftKings’ YouTube channel, he was asked if anyone from Nate Diaz, Conor McGregor, Alexander Volkanovski, Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway, Charles Oliveira, or Colby Covington could face him next inside the UFC octagon. To which he replied by saying, “100%.”
