If you ask any athlete about the toughest part of their career, many might point to the initial struggles or the rigorous training. However, the real challenge often comes with retirement. While the journey may be exhausting, it’s when athletes step away from the sport that the emotions hit hard—many find themselves in tears as they bid farewell to the passion they’ve dedicated themselves to. In the UFC, Alexander Munoz is the latest fighter to announce his retirement, citing a series of injuries that led him to hang up his gloves.
Recently, Munoz took to Instagram to share that he’s officially leaving the UFC. At just 34, while older stars like Pereira are taking over in UFC, much like Khabib Nurmagomedov, he decided to say goodbye but for different reasons. In his post, he thanked UFC CEO Dana White and everyone involved for the chance to compete in such a huge organization.
In addition, Munoz revealed that his decision stemmed from a long history of injuries. Over the past six years, his knee, elbow, and shoulder have endured significant wear and tear, ultimately influencing his choice to step away from the Octagon.
In his words, “In the past six years, l’ve endured multiple injuries that have tested me both mentally and physically. These included but certainly weren’t limited to, two full knee reconstructions on my left knee, a torn PCL in my right knee, and more recently, two weeks before my last fight, I suffered a tear in my right elbow, a separated ac joint in my right shoulder.”
What’s Next For UFC Star Alexander Munoz?
Looking back on his career, Munoz gained recognition through the Dana White Contender Series, impressing UFC President Dana White and securing his place in the promotion. Despite his potential, he experienced two major losses in the Octagon. After bouncing back with a win against Carl Deaton, another injury sidelined him, prompting his retirement with a 7-2 record. While his talent was evident, he never fully capitalized on it. Now, the big question remains: what does the future hold for him?
In his retirement announcement, he answered and said he is now focusing on his health and well-being. He and his wife are planning to start a family this year, and he wants to be healthy and present for them. Now, after ending his career, he wants to focus on two things: his health and his future with his family.
