One of the most exciting upcoming Lightweight matchups is Dustin Poirier challenging Islam Makhachev for the title in the main event of UFC 302. Despite winning his last bout and defying the odds, Poirier is still a heavy underdog in this title challenge. Makhachev, who has a grappling-heavy style in the cage, is the clear favorite against the Louisiana native.
A UFC legend was spotted warning Islam of the danger of facing Poirier in the cage, which made it clear that Dustin should never be underestimated in the octagon.
Islam Makhachev warned by UFC Legend
Chael Sonnen has fought for the UFC title in two different weight divisions. The man knows what it takes to win at the epitome of the sport of MMA. In a recent video uploaded on his YouTube channel, Sonnen was spotted warning Islam Makhachev, and the Lightweight champ might want to pay some heed to it. Sonnen said,
It’s an incredibly difficult guy to deal with….You’re dealing with a guy who doesn’t give a damn of what just happened. If he’s beating you by hundred points or you’re beating him by hindred points. He’s coming at you full steam Alex Pereira style. It’s a lot to deal with. That’s what Dustin is.
Sonnen made it clear no one can be entirely sure of Islam Makhachev finishing Dustin in the fight. Poirier has been in many wars over the past decade and always comes forward, irrespective of the scorecard. The title challenger has defied the odds several times over many years and has beaten some top Lightweights.
In his last fight, Dustin finished Benoit St-Denis in the second round via vicious knockout. He was dominated on the ground in the first round and returned to finish Benoit in the second. He is also often regarded as one of the best boxers in the Lightweight division. Dustin Poirier will need every ounce of him to beat Islam Makhachev in the octagon. The former BMF contender has struggled against grapplers in title fights, and Islam is once again a natural grappler.
