In the octagon, fighters aim to knock out opponents or force them to submit, but the UFC bans certain dangerous moves. Fighters have sometimes used these illegal moves, whether accidentally or on purpose. With Jon Jones headlining the upcoming PPV event, the controversy over his use of 12-6 elbows is noteworthy. Jones’s use of this illegal move prompted Joe Rogan to make a special request to Dana White.

The strikes are downward elbow strikes thrown while in a mount position. They are commonly referred to as “12-6” elbows, based on the positions of the clock digits. The 12-6 elbow rule gained notoriety because it resulted in MMA fighter Jon Jones receiving a loss on his professional record.
In a fight against Matt Hamill in December 2009, Jones used 12-6 elbows from the mount position, which led to his disqualification and Hamill being declared the winner by disqualification. Jones has faced criticism for his actions inside the octagon, with accusations of unethical behavior such as eye-poking being frequently leveled against him.
Jon Jones has been known to use another illegal move, where he pokes his opponent’s eyes. Joe Rogan highlighted this during one of his previous podcasts with Jamahal Hill, mentioning, “John poked a lot of people in the eyes yeah you know I’m sure he didn’t mean to do it but that style of doing it like that of having the hands out especially.”
Jon Jones is often criticized for being an unethical competitor, with accusations of intentionally poking opponents in the eyes during fights, whether it’s against Glover Teixeira at UFC 172 or Daniel Cormier. Eye pokes and crotch shots are common infractions in MMA matches. Check out the video above to see instances of Jones’s eye poking against various fighters.
