At UFC 309, Jon Jones solidified his status as the best fighter in MMA history, retaining his undefeated record with a dominant performance against Stipe Miocic. Jones, already a legend in the UFC’s light heavyweight division, stepped into the octagon with the aim of proving that his skills could translate to the big boys and boy, did he deliver.
Miocic came into the fight with a reputation for his knockout power and experience in big-title bouts. He’s widely regarded as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. For Jones, however, it was a chance to further cement his GOAT status by overcoming one of the toughest challenges of his career.
The fight was a clinic from start to finish. In Round 1, Jones wasted no time in showcasing his versatility. He landed crisp strikes and used his wrestling to control Miocic on the ground. Jones’ signature elbows came into play, opening up cuts on Miocic’s face and giving a glimpse of the damage to come. The first round was clearly Jones’ as he dominated the striking and grappling exchanges.
Round 2 saw Miocic try to rally, but his shots lacked the precision and power to seriously threaten ‘Bones.‘ The former champion’s movement appeared slow, his punches lacked snap, and Jones continued to control the tempo of the fight. By Round 3, Miocic had little left to offer.
The end came when Jon Jones, with his signature creativity, landed a jumping spinning back kick to Miocic’s midsection. The shot dropped Miocic to the canvas, and ‘Bones’ quickly swarmed with ground and pound, finishing the fight with a brutal TKO at 4:25 of Round 3.

Jon Jones, of course, is no stranger to controversy. The heavyweight champion has been at the top of the UFC’s rankings for years. After moving up to heavyweight and securing the title in 2023, Jones seemed to have little left to prove. He had been toying with the idea of fighting Alex Pereira, possibly for a BMF title, but White’s new directive seemed to put those plans on hold.
“If Jon Jones wants to fight again after Saturday night, he will fight Tom Aspinall,” said White via Jim Rome.
Aspinall, the young and rising star in the heavyweight division, had claimed the interim heavyweight title after a stunning win at UFC 295. The Brit has been calling out Jones ever since, hoping to unify the titles and prove he belongs among the elite. However, Jones has repeatedly dismissed Aspinall’s calls for a fight. Now, it seems that Dana White is making sure to get Aspinall what he deserves.
