Belal Muhammad finally received the opportunity he deserved when Dana White announced the main event of UFC 304. Muhammad will take on Leon Edwards, the welterweight champion, in the main event of UFC 304 in Manchester. Leon Edwards is a sizeable betting favorite in the fight, but many feel Muhammad is a live dog, especially Javier Mendez, head coach of Team Khabib.
Muhammad presently has the second-longest unbeaten streak at welterweight. Edwards, the champion, has the longest streak. Edwards’ recent victories were against Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman. On the other hand, Muhammad had defeated Gilbert Burns, Sean Brady, Vicente Luque, and Stephen Thompson in his past three fights.
Javier Mendez speaks on Belal Muhammad’s path to victory
Dana White had promised Muhammad the title shot after he defeated Gilbert Burns. However, Muhammad’s lack of exciting finishes in the UFC made the promotion look for other opponents for Edwards after UFC 296. Muhammad has not gotten the opportunity, and Javier Mendez has stated Muhammad’s path to victory in his interview with The Schmo.
“He’s been training with us for the last couple of years. He was maybe going to come to train for this camp in Dagestan, but I don’t think he did. So I don’t really know where he’s at. I’m pulling for him; he’s our guy. You know, and it’s going to be a tough fight. It’s going to be one of those ones where he’s got to dig deep,” Mendez said of Muhammad.
“He has to dig deep, he has to stay focused, he has to stay on task, and he has to make this fight a very dirty fight. Because if not, if it’s a technical thing, Leon’s [Edwards] too far ahead. There’s no way that I see him doing great on the outside. He’s got to be on the inside, making it a gritty, wrestling-type fight,” Mendez said of Muhammad’s path to victory.
Edwards had already planned ahead of his fight with Muhammad. He had revealed his intention to fight Conor McGregor after UFC 304. Is Edwards planning so far ahead? It remains to be seen as Muhammad has the tools to sprint an upset.
