In the main event of UFC 302, Islam Makhachev will defend against Dustin Poirier, showcasing the UFC’s lightweight division.
Makhachev is a multiple gold medallist in Combat Sambo who received training from Khabib Nurmagomedov, the former lightweight champion. With thirteen consecutive victories, the Russian has a record of 14-1 in the UFC. He defeated Charles Oliveira to win the lightweight championship and has just defended his title twice in a row against Alexander Volkanovski, the former UFC featherweight champion.
After the WEC and UFC merged in 2011, Poirier became a member of the UFC. He holds the record for the most Fight of the Night bonuses (nine) in UFC history at 22-7 with one no-contest in the octagon. The former interim lightweight champion of the UFC is 2-2 in his previous four fights and is 0-2 in lightweight title matches. When “The Diamond” faced off last in March, he defeated up-and-coming opponent Benoit Saint-Denis.
Islam Makhachev Grappling With Frankie Edgar’s Sons
Next month, at New Jersey’s Prudential Center, the main event of UFC 302 will feature the dominant Dagestani against fan favorite Dustin Poirier. Additionally, Makhachev might need to refer to the lessons learned from his former pupil Khabib Nurmagomedov, who ended the American in 2019.
After two unsuccessful attempts, the adored Poirier has regained one final chance at lightweight gold. And this summer in Newark, he will take on Makhachev, risking everything, possibly even his career.
Makhachev has been training alongside UFC veteran Frankie Edgar at Nick Catone MMA in New Jersey to prepare for his upcoming fight.

The victor of Charles Oliveira vs. Arman Tsarukyan, who was at the event, would challenge Makhachev for the title, according to UFC president Dana White. But even though Dustin Poirier defeated Benoit Saint-Denis, who wasn’t even ranked in the top 10 at lightweight at the time, he lost to Benoit Saint-Denis, who presented Dustin Poirier with the opportunity to challenge for the undisputed lightweight championship for the second time in his career because Tsarukyan turned down the chance for a quick turnaround.
