At UFC 290, Pantoja defeated Brandon Moreno via split decision to win the flyweight title. At UFC 296 in December, the Brazilian fighter defeated Brandon Royval via unanimous decision to defend his title for the first time successfully.
With a 12-1 record, Erceg is ranked No. 10 among fighters in the official UFC flyweight rankings going into the match. Originating in Perth, Australia, Erceg has won 11 straight fights, three of which were while he was on the UFC roster. In September 2017, he lost his lone professional fight. In March of this year, Erceg defeated Matt Schnell via knockout.
