On Saturday night, Poirier and Saint-Denis shared the Octagon at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida. With the Saint-Denis hype train already in full swing, Poirier started the battle as the underdog.

In UFC 299 Benoit Saint-Denis applied pressure on Dustin Poirier in the closing moments of the bout, and Poirier delivered a right hand that left Saint-Denis startled. Poirier pursued a guillotine choke despite the advice of his team.
Saint-Denis made his getaway and returned to Poirier. Saint-Denis stood as Poirier inverted his positions and attempted to be taken out. He took a step backward and launched blows. Poirier broke away and came down with a left hand. Poirier made a right-hand landing—a subsequent right-hand cut-down Saint-Denis.
Poirier considered choking again with a guillotine but decided against it. The fight was over when he delivered another right punch that knocked Saint-Denis to the ground during the second round, the official stoppage time was around 3:32.
