The world of mixed martial arts is about to get a whole lot more intense. The UFC recently decided to introduce a couple of rule changes that are sure to have fight fans on the edge of their seats. Buckle up because things are about to get downright savage. These two include lifting the ban from 12-6 elbows. The second rule made changes in what is considered a grounded opponent.
First up, the once-banned 12-6 elbow is making a triumphant return to the Octagon. For the uninitiated, this refers to a practice where an elbow strike comes crashing down from the 12 o’clock position to the 6 o’clock position. It was previously banned due to its extreme danger. But it seems the MMA overlords have changed their minds on it.
The UFC has also decided to redefine what it means to be a “grounded” fighter. Previously, a fighter could avoid taking damage to the head by simply placing a hand on the mat. Well, those days are over and now; a fighter will only be considered grounded if any part of their body, other than their hands or feet, touches the canvas.
This rule change is sure to have some major implications. Remember that controversial Aljamain Sterling vs. Petr Yan title fight? Yan lost his belt due to an illegal knee strike on a “grounded” Sterling? Well, with this new definition, fighters will have fewer loopholes to exploit, and the action is bound to be even more intense.
Jon Jones Reacts To Unbanning Of The 12-6 Elbow Rule
Back in 2009, ‘Bones‘ faced off against Matt Hamill. In the midst of a flurry of ground-and-pound, he landed elbows that were deemed to have violated the 12-6 rule. This was his lone loss. Fast forward to the present day, and the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports Mixed Martial Arts Committee have decided to lift the ban on this once-taboo technique.
Jon Jones was ecstatic with this news. This rule change could potentially mean that his loss to Hamill might be overturned to a no-contest. Taking to social media, he didn’t mince words as he called on Dana White.
