Last weekend, Denver, Colorado, hosted a women’s strawweight showdown between Rose Namajunas and Tracy Cortez. In a thrilling main event fight, ‘Thug Rose’ delivered an impressive performance and won in front of her hometown crowd. Meanwhile, Cortez, who entered the fight undefeated, faced a setback with the loss. Now, Cortez draws inspiration from rapper J. Cole as she works to bounce back from her defeat at UFC Denver.
The #11 ranked women’s flyweight fought the #6 ranked fighter on short notice and managed to hold her own against a former UFC champion despite the challenging conditions. After losing to the 32-year-old fighter, Tracy Cortez is focused on recovering from her first defeat in the organization. She took Instagram and posted several photos of the fight night, drawing strength from J. Cole’s song “Love Yourz,” in the caption, she wrote: “There’s beauty in the struggle.”
The 30-year-old faced criticism during the weigh-ins when she initially missed the weight. She weighed 127 pounds with clothes on and 126.5 pounds after removing them. Tracy Cortez was given an extra hour to gain weight, and after cutting her hair, she hit the 126-pound limit.
Despite the loss, Cortez is focused on coming back stronger. She acknowledges that taking the fight on short notice without a full training camp played a role in her performance. Even without completing a full camp, she sustained minimal damage from her opponent. Now, after the drama of last weekend’s event, the UFC is gearing up for another women’s main event at UFC Vegas 94, which will take place this weekend.
