As UFC 309 draws closer, fans are growing increasingly excited. Jon Jones is set to defend his UFC heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic, a fight that was originally scheduled for UFC 295 but had to be postponed due to Jones’ injury. Despite this matchup, fans have also witnessed interim UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall repeatedly challenge Jones. However, Jones doesn’t seem particularly interested in fighting Aspinall and remains confident that the UK star won’t surpass him in title victories.
Aspinall responded to Jon Jones’ comments during The Ariel Helwani Show, where Jones claimed that Aspinall wouldn’t match his number of title bout victories. Aspinall replied, saying,
“I don’t want to win as many championships as him. I just want to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. That’s all, I want to make as much money as I can in the shortest amount of time possible. And then bounce and do something else.”
Aspinall emphasized that his goal is to leave the sport healthy and without suffering any severe injuries. He added that once he achieves this, he has no interest in becoming the greatest heavyweight ever or fighting into his forties. However, there’s a possibility that fans may never see a Jones vs. Aspinall matchup, as the 37-year-old Jones is considering retiring after his fight with Miocic.
Will Jon Jones Ever Face Tom Aspinall or Retire After UFC 309?
Since March 2023, Jon Jones has been on a hiatus after capturing the vacant UFC heavyweight title with a submission win over former interim champion Ciryl Gane. His potential retirement has generated a lot of buzz among MMA fans.
In a recent social media interaction, the 37-year-old teased the idea of hanging up his gloves after his upcoming fight with Stipe Miocic. Addressing a criticism, Jones hinted that he could retire and never have to work again after this year. He shared on Instagram, “Fun fact after this year Jon Jones will never have to work again, retired at age 37.”
