The heavyweight champions are locked in a social media showdown as interim champion Tom Aspinall responds to Jon Jones’ recent remarks. Jones, set to defend his heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, commented that Aspinall’s accomplishments aren’t particularly impressive. However, the Englishman fired back, confidently highlighting his major achievements in response to the criticism.
After hearing Jon Jones’ recent remarks, Tom Aspinall took to Instagram to respond creatively to the UFC heavyweight champion. The English fighter posted a well-crafted reply, sharing a video compilation of his knockout wins and impressive stats in the heavyweight division.
The video highlighted milestones like the all-time shortest average fight time in the UFC, the most finishes since 2020, the highest knockdowns per 15 minutes among active fighters, and victories over five top-10 ranked heavyweights.
Aspinall’s highlights included Sergei Pavlovich and Curtis Blaydes’ knockouts and wins over ranked opponents like Alexander Volkov and Marcin Tybura. Nevertheless, Jones remains unconvinced, saying Aspinall’s achievements don’t merit a matchup, as he’s more interested in a fight with Alex Pereira.
Jon Jones Dismisses Tom Aspinall’s Record, Eyes Alex Pereira as Next Opponent
Despite Tom Aspinall’s repeated callouts for Jon Jones to defend his title against him, it seems unlikely the heavyweight champion will agree to the fight. There’s also a strong chance Jones may retire after his bout with Miocic. However, if Jones decides to continue, he’s hinted that his next opponent would not be Aspinall but rather Alex Pereira.
“I feel like Tom Aspinall is. I don’t want to say nobody, but he just hasn’t proven anything. He hasn’t done anything. I’m not here to gamble someone else making a name off of me. If there were to be a fight of a guy that’s still on our UFC roster, that would be not only financially worth it but also legacy worth it. It would be Alex Pereira,” Jones stated.
