The UFC’s Featherweight division has recently become one of its most popular rosters. Georgian mixed martial artist Ilia Topuria currently rules the division. The rosters have fighters from around the world, and things have gotten too chaotic. Brian Ortega, one of the Featherweight greats, stunned everyone when he revealed he would depart from the division.
Ortega is one of the most versatile fighters in the UFC and has a heavy grappling pedigree. He recently gave an interview and weighed in on his next move.
Why Brian Ortega is Leaving The Featherweight Roster?
Brian Ortega holds an impressive record with sixteen wins and three deficits. Ortega last fought against Yair Rodriguez and was able to take his revenge for losing to the Mexican earlier on. He submitted Yair via a viscous arm triangle, which almost took Yair’s limb apart.
In a recent interview, Ortega made it clear that, given what’s happening at the absolute top, he is not eligible for a title shot. He pointed out that all the highest-ranked stars are booked or scheduled to fight later this year. He later revealed that he would be moving to the Lightweight division to have a go at the UFC gold. Brian said,
There’s no title fight for me anytime soon because of what’s going on in the game. … You have to make peace with reality.
The grappling extraordinaire will challenge Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira in the octagon in the coming months.
