There’s no doubt that whatever character Sacha Baron Cohen plays in a film, it quickly gains a cult following, and his film Borat was no exception. Despite its success, the movie sparked controversy, especially in Kazakhstan, where many were offended by the stereotypes and negative portrayal of their country. Now, in a bold response, Kazakhstan’s biggest superstar, Shavkat Rakhmonov, has dismissed the character, humorously adding that Borat won’t come out alive from the country.
For those who haven’t seen Borat, the film initially faced a lot of backlash, especially from Kazakhstan, due to its offensive portrayal of the country. The character, known for his exaggerated antisemitism, sexism, and racism, was meant to shock and provoke. The Kazakh government took steps to distance itself from the characters and the films, often criticizing the portrayal as inaccurate and harmful.
Meanwhile, when Nina Marie Daniele, known for asking out-of-the-box questions, asked Shavkat about his thoughts on Borat and how “perfect” the character is. To which he replied, “If Borat comes to Kazakhstan. He is not coming out alive.”
Rakhmonov dismissed the character entirely, making it clear that he didn’t find the portrayal of Kazakhstan amusing. Notably, the actor himself said Borat was just a comedy and the version of Kazakhstan in the film wasn’t accurate. He highlighted that the real Kazakhstan is beautiful, modern, and proud, which is very different from the film’s portrayal. Subsequently, Kazakhstan’s tourism department embraced the phrase “Very Nice” to promote tourism, capitalizing on the popularity of Borat.
